Fine-arts participation grows; chess meet draws 375 students, theater visit brings 520

Fine-arts staff told the Laredo ISD Board on Oct. 6 that participation in district programs remains strong across music, band, dance, theater, visual arts and emerging activities such as chess.

Fred Rodriguez, the district's fine-arts coordinator, reported that secondary program numbers total about 4,250 program enrollments (students may be counted in multiple programs) and that elementary combined music participation was 9,744 program enrollments. He said the elementary fine-arts program total reached about 10,432 program enrollments districtwide, representing roughly 71.7% program participation at the elementary level.

Chess tournament, themed rewards: Rodriguez told trustees that the district's first chess meet drew approximately 375 students and that organizers distributed themed chess sets to winners to increase student interest. "375 is a really good number for the first meet," Rodriguez said. Organizers reported that the elementary winners received themed sets for several categories (for example, Batman and Minions for different levels) and that student volunteers helped run the event.

Theater collaboration: Trustees were also told that Laredo ISD partnered with the Laredo Theater Guild International to bring a production of Sense and Sensibility to students at TAMIU; Rodriguez said about 520 students attended and that evening performances were offered free to students with ID.

Band, travel safety and meals: Board members raised concerns about student safety and logistics for band and fine-arts travel. Multiple trustees said they want directors and boosters to ensure students have meals when they travel for competitions. Rodriguez and other staff said UIL contest hosts are required to provide onsite medical support and that district athletic and event staff coordinate rapid response measures (cooling tubs, paramedics) at major contests. Rodriguez said district staff had distributed cell-phone contact lists and encouraged directors to carry first-aid kits; at trustees' request staff agreed to provide cost estimates for portable "jump" bags so directors could carry basic emergency supplies.

Scheduling and program notes: Rodriguez outlined the one-act play schedule, zone and district dates (zones late February; district in March) and said the district will host zone and district competition rounds at the Pack auditorium. He also reported that some middle schools add feeder options to align with high-school offerings and said he would provide chess participation breakdowns upon request.

Ending: Trustees praised organizers and volunteer student leaders who ran events; several asked for additional detail on meal plans and feeder-pattern expansion. Rodriguez said he will provide follow-up numbers for chess and a fuller list of participation by campus.
