Pharr — The Pharr City Commission proclaimed October as Manufacturing Month and city economic-development officials used the meeting to highlight partnerships that connect students to manufacturing employers, while staff recapped the recent IKEA grand opening and other economic-development events in the city.
Leticia Alame, marketing director for the Pharr Economic Development Corporation (EDC), described Manufacturing Month as an opportunity to showcase the industry’s role in the regional economy and to strengthen ties between employers and local schools. “By aligning education with industry needs, we’re not only preparing the next generation of skilled talent, but also ensuring that manufacturers here in Pharr have the workforce they need to grow and thrive,” Alame said.
EDC remarks cited statewide and county manufacturing figures offered in the proclamation text: over 28,000 manufacturing firms in Texas, more than 3,700 located in Hidalgo County, manufacturing representing about 11.2% of state output, and an estimated 978,000 manufacturing employees in Texas (7,000 in Hidalgo County). The proclamation also noted an estimated average weekly wage in Hidalgo County of $1,173.
Mike Willis of the South Texas Manufacturers Association said the association and schools have worked for decades to create talent pipelines. Belinda Vargas, PSJA ISD career-and-technical education coordinator, described ongoing school–industry collaborations and upcoming events connecting students with employers.
City communications recapped recent economic-development highlights shared at the meeting, including the grand opening of the new IKEA at Pharr Town Center. Video remarks cited strong turnout, the store’s product selection and the expected regional draw for customers from both sides of the border.
Context: City officials framed Manufacturing Month as part of a countywide series of events involving colleges, school districts, manufacturers and workforce partners. EDC and industry speakers emphasized hands-on career pathways and credentialing through local career-technical education programs.
