County OKs three‑year WIC agreement with state for nutrition services totaling about $7.88 million

The Board of Supervisors approved a three‑year agreement with the California Department of Public Health (state agreement no. 25‑10181) to fund Madera County’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutrition program through Sept. 30, 2028.
Sarah Boss, director of public health, described WIC as a long‑standing federal nutrition program that serves low‑income pregnant and postpartum women, infants and children up to age 5. Boss said the local program serves more than 8,000 participants annually with 20 WIC staff and offers telehealth visits, in‑person scheduled and walk‑in appointments and a summer farmers market voucher program for participants.
The agenda listed the state agreement amount as $7,885,602. Boss told the board the three‑year contract funds the program at about $2,628,000 per year, totaling approximately $7.88 million. She said there has been no reduction in federal funding for WIC at this time.
The program, Boss said, is one of the most evidence‑based public health interventions in the country and has been linked to reduced fetal deaths, lower infant mortality, longer pregnancies and decreased low birthweight rates.
The board voted 4–0 to approve the agreement and authorize the chair to sign.
