Council opens and closes hearings on Planet Fitness and Local Makerie wine bar; both go to plan commission

The Wauwatosa Common Council opened public hearings on two conditional-use permit requests and closed them after staff presentations and no public testimony.
The first request would allow Planet Fitness to operate a health club occupying about 21,200 square feet at 3203 North Mayfair Road in the General Commercial and Mayfair Corridor Overlay zoning districts. City staff said the proposed facility would include gym space, locker rooms, a spa area and a lobby and that Planet Fitness requested 24/7 operations. The staff presentation noted the item will appear before the Plan Commission on Oct. 13 for comment and return to the council on Oct. 28 for an approval decision.
The second request would permit the existing Local Makerie (a wine-and-art instruction facility at 2289 Ludington Avenue) to expand alcohol service beyond scheduled instructional sessions and operate a wine bar Wednesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. outside instructional hours. The proposed layout includes a workshop area, a wine bar and service counter, back office and a front-facing outdoor patio adjacent to Ludington Avenue. This application also goes to the Plan Commission on Oct. 13 and will return to the council Oct. 28.
No one in the chamber or on Zoom spoke for or against either request during the hearings; the council declared both hearings closed. Staff indicated plan-commission review is the next step before any final council action.
