Supervisors schedule work sessions on port-of-entry roadmap, zoning and comprehensive plan as county seeks coordinated economic strategy

Supervisors used the Oct. 2 work session to set a near-term plan for economic development work, prioritizing the county’s commercial port of entry and corridor planning along U.S. 191.
Staff said the board has not had a coordinated countywide economic-development plan for many years and proposed a short “road map” study focused on the port of entry and nearby infrastructure (airport, rail opportunities, Highway 80/191 corridors). Supervisors invited a consultant with experience coordinating multi-jurisdictional economic plans to present by Teams; staff said the consultant’s proposed roadmap would focus initially on the port and could later be expanded countywide at additional cost.
Supervisors asked staff to schedule a January work session focused on zoning along the port and U.S. 191 so the board can anticipate and guide rezoning requests tied to increased interest. Supervisors also asked that staff bring the county comprehensive plan timeline and a clear map of parcels that could be subject to rezoning requests in the port corridor.
No regulatory changes were made at the Oct. 2 work session; staff will provide a consultant proposal and schedule the follow-up sessions.
