Lyon County honors sheriff’s investigator and citizen for on-scene rescue

Sheriff Brad Polk told the Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 2 that Investigator Jeremy Tafelmeyer was being awarded the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office lifesaving medal for actions on Aug. 22 when Tafelmeyer and a nearby citizen rescued an occupant from a residence fully engulfed in flames.
Polk said Tafelmeyer saw heavy smoke from U.S. Highway 50, notified dispatch, entered the structure despite intense heat and smoke, reached an incapacitated person with the help of a citizen and brought the individual to safety. Sheriff Polk said Tafelmeyer rendered first aid and maintained the victim’s consciousness until paramedics arrived.
Polk also presented a community-service award to the assisting citizen, identified in the presentation as Jose Ramos Conchas, and the board expressed appreciation for the rescue. No formal action beyond the presentations was recorded.
