Commissioners proclaim October 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Wilson County

The Wilson County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation Oct. 6 declaring October 2025 as Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Wilson County.
Scarlett Neal (identified in the meeting as the county Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program coordinator) presented data in the proclamation noting that in 2025 an estimated more than 97 women in Wilson County were projected to be diagnosed with breast cancer and 12 were expected to die from the disease. The proclamation also referenced a 1-in-8 lifetime risk in the United States and noted screening and follow-up services available through the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCC) at local health departments for eligible uninsured or underinsured women.
Commissioners discussed how the BCCC program functions locally: screenings and eligibility checks begin at the health department, mammograms are provided through the local hospital, and the program can cover additional imaging (ultrasound) and biopsies if needed; the program also helps patients apply for Medicaid if treatment is required. Commissioners and the program coordinator discussed outreach and access; no changes to county funding or program structure were made at the meeting. The proclamation was approved by voice vote.
