The Wilson County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 6 to adopt an ordinance allowing the county 9-1-1 center to perform criminal background checks for current members and applicants of volunteer fire departments at no fee to the departments.
Assistant E911 Director Jennifer Etheridge told the board that North Carolina General Statute requires background checks for volunteer fire-department members and that, at present, volunteer departments are paying for those checks themselves. Etheridge said adopting the ordinance would allow E911 to run background checks at county expense as a cost-saving measure for the departments.
Commissioners moved, seconded, and approved the ordinance by voice vote. The board did not record an ordinance number or a roll-call tally in the public transcript; the action was recorded as approved. The county will need to develop the procedural workflow for E911 to receive requests and provide results to departments.
