Monticello board approves two‑year cooperative for boys swim and dive program

The Monticello School Board voted 6‑0 Oct. 6 to approve a two‑year cooperative agreement that will allow boys from Becker and Big Lake to compete as part of Monticello’s swimming and diving program.
Gary Rebnick, Monticello’s activities director, told the board that the district’s enrollment placed Monticello in Class 2A for the next two years and that neighboring Becker and Big Lake had expressed interest in co‑opting because Becker had only three swimmers last year and Big Lake currently reported two (both middle‑school students). Rebnick said the arrangement would have no direct cost to Monticello: participating students would be responsible for their own transportation and the schools would split team expenses pro rata based on participation counts.
Board members asked how the coop would be handled if Monticello reverted to Class 1A after the two‑year cycle; Rebnick said the district would dissolve the coop if the smaller schools could field their own teams and return to prior arrangements. He also said Monticello might host one dual meet at Becker during the coming season.
The board approved the cooperative agreement by voice vote, 6‑0. The motion was moved by Melissa Curtis and seconded by Casey Root.
