County brings custodial services in‑house, citing security and quality concerns

The Board of County Commissioners voted Oct. 7 to transfer custodial services for county buildings from third‑party contractors to in‑house county employees after an internal audit and interim staffing experiment.
Anthony Warren, director of Building and Facility Services, told the board the county used in‑house staff on a temporary basis after terminating a custodial contract and found the in‑house crew provided higher, more consistent quality while avoiding security and background‑screening gaps found with some contractors.
Warren said the change follows an internal audit recommendation and an interim period during which county staff "stepped up" and provided custodial coverage. He listed benefits as improved quality control, better background checks, flexible scheduling, more direct oversight, workforce stability and lower long‑term costs.
John Evans of Facilities Management also praised the in‑house crew and said having employees on site improved routine building maintenance and spotting issues that might require repair.
Commissioners praised the transition and said they had received positive reports about the in‑house crews. The board approved the staffing change on a unanimous vote.
