Spring Valley students stage "Reveal Airlines" math spotlight to introduce Reveal Math curriculum

Spring Valley Elementary School presented a themed school spotlight, "Reveal Airlines," to the Millbrae City School District Board of Trustees, demonstrating classroom practices and the new California Reveal Math curriculum.

Principal Huy led the presentation, framing instruction with an aviation theme in which students role-played pilots, flight attendants and air-traffic controllers to explain classroom routines and math strategies. Students described lesson routines that begin with "what do you notice? What do you wonder?" and move through guided practice, investigation and formative checks for understanding.

Fifth grader Nava Chon performed an opening role as the flight attendant and Luke Shin, a fifth grader, described his interest in decimals and fractions: "I like fractions and decimals because they show better details than whole numbers," Shin said. First-grade teacher Jennifer Ryan and fourth-grade officer Danielle Bogan described inquiry-based practices including manipulatives, dry-erase desk work and group discussion.

Principal Huy said the school has partnered with a streaming reading service, Harper for Kids, and selected mathematics-themed books for a book-of-the-month program. The principal also thanked school volunteers and sponsors, including the PTA, Millbrae Education Foundation (MEF), Dads Club and PCBA, and noted the school has about 30 student valets this year who assist around campus.

Board members praised the presentation for creativity and community turnout. Trustee Musa said Spring Valley "really comes out" and cited the event as an example of school culture and parent and staff engagement. The board paused the meeting for a short break so students could receive cookies and staff and parents could take a group photo.

The spotlight was informational and no board action was taken.
