The Blount County Board of Education voted on three formal items during its October monthly meeting: naming Fairview Elementary's gymnasium for James (Jim) Compton; approving a budget increase for the state public school safety grant (Fund 141) in the amount of $216,904.52; and forwarding a resolution recognizing Blount County Chief Financial Officer Bridal Baldwin's acceptance of additional temporary CFO responsibilities for the board.
The board approved the proposal to name Fairview Elementary's gymnasium the Jim Compton Gymnasium after several speakers described Compton's decades of service as a teacher, coach and board member. A motion to approve the naming was moved and seconded; the roll call vote recorded: Randy Early Howard, Joe Lindsay, John Lowe, Chris Pass and Bill Porter—each voted yes. The motion passed.
The board then approved a budget increase to accept additional funds under the state public school safety grant (Fund 141). The meeting record lists the grant amount as $216,904.52. A motion and second were recorded and the roll call vote showed the same listed members voting yes; the motion passed.
Finally, the board voted to forward a resolution to the county commission acknowledging that Blount County Chief Financial Officer Bridal Baldwin would accept additional temporary CFO responsibilities for the Blount County Board of Education. The motion was moved and seconded and passed by roll call with the same members recorded as voting yes.
Discussion versus action: the transcript records speakers offering tributes and factual background for the gym-naming item and a brief procedural discussion before each vote, but contains no recorded abstentions, recorded negative votes or amendments to the motions. The actions were presented as motions with a second and resolved by roll call.
