Commission explores youth liaison and student advisory group; Revere High student expresses interest

The Revere Human Rights Commission discussed creating pathways for student participation, including a nonvoting youth liaison seat and a school-based student advisory board, and agreed to consult Revere High School staff before filing any formal motion.

Chair Hussaini said a Revere High School sophomore who participated in a prior field trip had expressed interest in joining commission work but cannot hold a voting seat while under 18. "That same student also expressed their interest in trying to join the Human Rights Commission, but since they were underage they really can't join our commission until they're of adult age," Chair Hussaini said.

Director Morabito suggested a formal youth liaison role and proposed partnering with civic teachers to create a high-school advisory board that could survey students and brief the commission. "You could create a liaison role, to ensure youth perspective is heard," Director Morabito said, noting the liaison would be nonvoting.

Commissioners proposed quarterly invitations to student leaders and recommended working with Dr. Garcia (Revere Public Schools) to confirm whether student groups or existing clubs can serve as the advisory body. Commissioner Pitch recommended encouraging a specific interested youth, Noor, to participate as a liaison if the school is supportive.

Chair Hussaini said she will contact Dr. Garcia and return to the commission at the next meeting with a proposal and possible motion to create a student advisory structure if none currently exists. Commissioners did not vote on a permanent youth seat at this meeting.
