Committee sends commemorative name 'Jim Marshall Way' for Sixteenth Street block to full board

The Land Use and Transportation Committee on Oct. 6 voted 3-0 to send a resolution to the Board of Supervisors that would add the commemorative street name Jim Marshall Way to signage for the block of Sixteenth Street between Noe and Castro.
Board President Rafael Mandelmann, sponsor of the resolution, told the committee that Marshall "was a legendary music photographer who documented San Francisco bands like Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and The Holding Company." Mandelmann said Marshall spent the final 26 years of his life living on Sixteenth Street and that neighbors and local organizations supported the proposal. Mandelmann thanked longtime neighbor Justin Fickelson and Marshall’s former assistant Amelia Davis for leading local outreach.
Several neighbors and longtime residents offered public comment in support. One neighbor who identified themselves as having been "born and raised on Sixteenth" said Marshall was "an institution in the neighborhood and the city" and urged supervisors to honor him. Theron Cabrich, who said Amelia Davis was on a book tour, described Marshall as "globally respected" and noted his influence on photographers from Time and National Geographic.
After public comment, Chair Mirna Melgar moved to forward the resolution with a positive recommendation. The committee recorded three ayes (Melgar, Chen, Mahmood) and the motion passed. The resolution will be placed on the Board of Supervisors’ agenda for further consideration, where final adoption would require a Board majority and the mayor’s signature.
