County and downtown organizers announce fall events; Blue River Hills road work will close segment Oct. 14–31

County and downtown organizers used the Oct. 6 commission meeting to preview fall community events and a short-term road closure.
Scott Hike, patrol major with the police department, announced National Night Out will be held Oct. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Ogden Community Center. Hike said the event is intended to foster community-police partnerships and will include carnival games, specialty police units and food.
Downtown event staff previewed Third Thursday on Oct. 16 — advertised as the “Big Little Apple Street Fest” — which will include an expanded schedule starting at 4 p.m., a classic car show on the 500 block, live music (Elton Dan and the Rocket Band), a pie-eating contest, inflatable races and other family activities. Organizers also described Halloween “All Treats Day” on Oct. 31 (expected to draw hundreds of children), a Nov. 8 holiday open house with small symphony performances, a Nov. 28 Festival of Lights lighting ceremony, and a Dec. 5 holiday parade starting at 5:30 p.m. Organizers invited commissioners to enter county vehicles and participate in the parade and provided the online application at downtownmhk.com.
Public works staff (Alvin Perez) announced a structure replacement project on Blue River Hills beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14. The work will close Blue River Hills to through traffic for the project segment located 1.3 miles north of Tuttle Creek Boulevard (Highway 24) to Stockdale Parkway. Perez told the commission the contractor expects permitting and the closure to be complete by Friday, Oct. 31.
No formal votes were required for the announcements; event organizers asked that county departments consider participating in the parade and other activities.
