Lake Forest honors El Toro student Tyva Veal for lifesaving rescue

The Lake Forest City Council on Oct. 7 recognized Lake Forest resident and El Toro High School student Tyva Veal for rescuing an elderly fisherman who collapsed in the surf.
Aaron Rodriguez of the city’s communications and marketing division described the incident: Veal removed the man’s heavy backpack, helped pull him to shore with others and supported him until first responders arrived. Rodriguez said a police officer later confirmed her actions saved the man’s life. Veal also received the Girl Scouts National Lifesaving Award.
Veal told the council she had dragged the man more than 300 feet and later learned he had suffered a stroke. “I do feel like a hero, but I think even more than that… I was able to save someone’s life,” she said. The council invited Veal and family members to the dais for a photograph and presented a certificate of recognition.
No council action was required for the recognition.
