Pickens board visits Tate Elementary; staff highlight inclusive instruction and student leadership

Members of the Pickens County Board of Education visited Tate Elementary during the Oct. 3 work session to hear presentations from teachers and students and to observe classroom practices the school described as promoting inclusion and student leadership.
Principal Scott Stevens introduced a series of short presentations by teachers and students intended to show “the face of Tate Elementary,” he said. Special-education teacher Mallory Childers described a collaborative small-group instructional model the school is using to integrate students with disabilities into tier-1 grade-level classrooms for portions of the school day. Childers said the approach increases access to grade-level content, peer modeling, social interaction and self-advocacy.
Teacher presenters described specific classroom practices: number talks and multiple-strategy problem solving in third grade, math intervention supports, teacher-to-teacher collaboration to extend learning for high-performing students, and hands-on projects used in science and gifted education. Multiple students spoke briefly about what they enjoy at school, and staff demonstrated a class activity for board members.
Principal Stevens praised the special-education team and individual teachers, saying the school’s collaborative approach had produced notable growth for some students who previously struggled. The board and superintendent thanked Tate staff for hosting the visit and for the evident emphasis on inclusion and teamwork.
The visit was presented as part of the board’s goal area focused on student achievement and success; no formal action or vote was taken during the school presentation.
