Perris names Morgan Park synthetic soccer field for longtime AYSO volunteer Pedro “Pete” Magana

The Perris City Council unanimously approved a proclamation and formal naming of the Morgan Park synthetic soccer field as the Pedro "Pete" Magana Field, recognizing more than three decades of volunteer service to youth sports in Perris.
Mayor Michael M. Vargas read the proclamation honoring Pedro "Pete" Magana for more than 30 years of service to Perris AYSO in roles including regional commissioner, referee administrator, field coordinator and coach. Council members presented Magana with the proclamation and a photograph opportunity with family and supporters.
Magana, who has coached multiple generations and whose family members have participated in AYSO, told the council he was surprised and grateful. "I just thank you for this recognition. I'm usually not a man with few words, but right now, you guys just totally caught me off guard," Magana said, adding thanks to his wife and family and to board members who have worked with him.
Council members offered short remarks. Mayor Pro Tem Raab said naming the field after Magana recognized "a legacy of leadership and mentorship." Councilman Malcolm Corona suggested the field signage emphasize Magana’s role as "Coach Pete." The council also directed staff to install a bronze plaque at the park to formalize the dedication.
The naming was approved as consent calendar item 10(k). The motion to adopt the consent calendar (excluding items pulled earlier) and to include the field naming was moved by Councilman Corona and seconded by Councilwoman Elizabeth Vallejo; the roll call for the standalone vote on 10(k) recorded 5‑0 approval.
The city will schedule a dedication event and install the park plaque; staff said the plaque and naming will provide a visible, long‑term recognition for Magana’s service.
