Southeast Tech reports construction camp drew students from 13 area high schools

Southeast Technical College reported a construction‑camp outreach event held in partnership with the Associated General Contractors of America that attracted high school students from across the region and increased interest in construction careers.
Phoenicia Homan, vice president of academics, told the board the college hosted a construction camp on Sept. 17 in partnership with the AGC and that 221 students from 13 area high schools participated. “Our students participated in eight hands‑on sessions led by our faculty and students as well as industry partners,” Homan said, listing sessions including heavy equipment operation, concrete carpentry, BIM modeling, civil engineering, land surveying, plumbing, HVAC and electrician instruction.
Participants rated the event positively, Homan said, with an average rating just over 4 out of 5, and she reported that 47% of attending students indicated they were more likely to pursue a career in construction after attending. Homan praised the college’s faculty and student mentors for their roles in recruiting and hands‑on instruction.
The board applauded the outreach as a pipeline activity that helps meet local workforce needs and acknowledged the report.
