Hope MacFarlane of Onslow County Animal Services outlined the department’s fall adoption and outreach schedule and offered seasonal safety reminders for pet owners.
MacFarlane said the shelter will participate in the Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters” initiative from Oct. 1–15, during which dogs will be available for adoption at $70 and cats at $30. She said adopters must complete a short survey required by the program and that the foundation helps subsidize the reduced costs.
Animal Services will extend adoption hours for a trunk‑or‑treat event on Saturday, Oct. 18, remaining open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. MacFarlane said volunteers and staff plan to decorate trunks and provide trick‑or‑treat activities while also hosting a few vendors.
MacFarlane said PetSmart Charities holds periodic adoption weeks and that Animal Services will be at the PetSmart on Western on a Friday she believed to be Oct. 24, with additional adoptions the following Saturday at the off‑road location; she indicated the Friday date was tentative and encouraged people to check the shelter’s website or social pages for confirmation.
For pet safety during Halloween, MacFarlane recommended microchipping and keeping animals away from front doors and high‑traffic areas during trick‑or‑treat hours. She provided the shelter’s address as 244 Georgetown Road and said the shelter is open to the public Tuesday–Friday from noon to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
