Onslow County Sheriff's Office to host DEA-sponsored Drug Take Back Oct. 25

Deputy Benjamin Donovan of the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said the county will participate in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 25, with two collection sites staffed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Donovan said the Sheriff’s Office will staff drop-off locations at the Walmart near Yap Road (the Walmart/Lowe’s area) and at the Walgreens at the intersection of Richlands Highway (Highway 53) and Berghall Highway. He said the program is designed for residents to dispose of unwanted prescription and over‑the‑counter medications safely.
The program accepts prescription medications, over‑the‑counter drugs, medication patches, medication samples and veterinary/pet medications; staff asked residents to leave medicines in their original containers and to remove personal information from prescription labels before drop‑off. Donovan said syringes and other sharps will not be accepted at the collection sites, and that illicit or “street” drugs will also be refused. He said the drop‑off is anonymous and residents will not be asked for names.
Donovan advised residents who cannot make the national day that year‑round options exist: some pharmacies, hospitals and law‑enforcement agencies participate as permanent DEA drop‑off locations. He said residents can find additional sites via the DEA website or contact the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office for details.
The county emphasized the event as a public‑safety and public‑health measure to reduce the risk that expired or unneeded medications are accessed by children, pets or other household members.
