Commissioners proclaim Oct. 9 a Day of Caring as United Way readies volunteer projects

The Centre County Board of Commissioners adopted Proclamation 47 on Sept. 30, proclaiming Oct. 9, 2025, as the county’s Day of Caring and highlighting United Way volunteer projects across multiple communities.

The proclamation was presented by United Way representatives who described planned volunteer activities that include neighborhood cleanups, landscaping, roof repairs and work at local institutions such as Union Cemetery, the Miles-Humes Historical Library and residential programs that serve people with disabilities. Staff and commissioners noted the program’s longevity and community support.

Why it matters: the Day of Caring coordinates hundreds of volunteers and dozens of nonprofits to deliver maintenance and short-term improvements that local nonprofits cannot staff year-round. County staff said the annual event helps preserve facilities and supports service providers that operate on limited budgets.

County leaders noted high school participation (about 400 juniors and seniors from Bellefonte Area High School) and key volunteer sites, and urged residents to participate or attend a post-event celebration at Champs scheduled for late afternoon.

Practical details: organizers said projects will include roof replacements at selected homes, library work that may require volunteers comfortable with dusty projects, and landscaping/yard work at several sites. Volunteers were told to expect a morning of work and an after-party from roughly 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Champs (times subject to organizers’ confirmation).
