City staff updated the Nogales City Council on Oct. 1 about plans to convert a long-vacant parcel on Trinidad Street into a neighborhood park, saying the project is in procurement and has a budget of $150,000.
Jessica, a city project lead, told the council the city has obtained one quote from Anderson Construction (Tucson) and is awaiting two additional quotes, including one from a company called Mojave. "We are also waiting on 2 other quotes from Mojave," Jessica said, adding the team has worked with Anderson previously on irrigation systems and field work.
Council members said the park property was acquired after a land swap involving Conchas Park and county property and that turning the site into a park had been discussed for years. The city manager confirmed $150,000 was included in the budget for the park but said the full amount might not be spent and any unspent funds could be transferred to other park projects.
Staff said the design could include turf, a plaza area and possibly a playground structure; at present the site is a parking lot. The city emphasized that procurement rules are being followed and that staff will return to council with pictures and additional updates as quotes and work progress.
No formal vote was taken on Oct. 1; staff said they will bring further information, including contractor bids and proposed scope, back to a future meeting.
