Superintendent reports enrollment, accountability dip and begins planning for no-tax-increase bond

On Oct. 2 the Hancock County School District superintendent reported current enrollment and accountability information and told the board the district is preparing to present bond project proposals aimed at avoiding a tax increase.
The superintendent said the district’s enrollment currently stands at 3,879 students and that the district’s special-education population is about 20 percent. He reported average daily attendance at about 93 percent and said chronic absenteeism has dropped roughly two percentage points.
On accountability, the superintendent said the district’s statewide rank dropped from 17 to 22 and that the district’s accountability points fell from 734 to 718 amid statewide changes in assessment and accountability rules. He told the board that many districts statewide saw point reductions after changes implemented by the Mississippi Department of Education.
Regarding capital planning, the superintendent said conversations with board members and consultants point toward pursuing a bond that does not increase the tax rate. “The consensus in speaking to everyone that I've spoken to, you really want us to move toward a no tax increase bond,” he said, and staff will prepare project lists and direction to present in November.
The board did not vote on a bond measure at the meeting; members directed staff to prepare materials for future consideration.
