Consultant says energy-efficiency work produced roughly $407,000 in savings, small surplus for Hancock County School District

The Hancock County School District received an energy-savings report on Oct. 2 in which a presenter said the district realized roughly $407,000 in savings this year as part of an energy-efficiency project.
Rudy Watkins, who presented the report, told the board “Good news for the district, we had a surplus again this year. Saved about 407,000.” He said most of the documented gains came from lighting upgrades and that about $320,000 of the savings came from reduced electric, gas and water use, with roughly $70,000–$80,000 attributable to operational savings such as reduced repair needs.
Watkins said the contractor waived the fee to produce the report. “Our teams waived the fee to do this report. You guys have been such good partners,” he told the board, adding the contractor would provide the material at cost to ensure the district continued to realize savings.
Board members asked few detailed questions during the presentation; district staff indicated they were collaborating with the presenter on emergency chiller repairs at Hancock High School because related design work had been done as part of the efficiency project.
The report was included in the meeting packet and detailed savings figures and project documentation were available to board members, the presenter said.
