Director highlights retirements, staffing fills, new report card and summer projects for Benton County schools

During the director’s report, Benton County School leadership recognized five retirees and announced several operational updates ahead of the new school year.
Recognition and staffing: The board acknowledged retirees including Christy Wilson and several others for their service to the district. Staff reported that all certified positions had been filled as of the meeting, while a small number of support positions remained open (one custodian candidate and one facility position at the Career Technical Center were discussed). The director said one education assistant position remains open at the high school level.
Report card and policy: Administrators presented a new standards-based, performance-style elementary report card that staff said is intended to give parents more informative academic feedback; the director’s report stated that boards are only required to be aware of report-card formats and not to take formal action. Staff asked board members to attend a scheduled policy meeting to discuss family medical leave and a cell-phone policy; the meeting was proposed for Thursday the 17th at 5:30 p.m. and the board’s next regular meeting was announced for Aug. 4 at 6:00 p.m.
Facilities and projects: Summer projects described in the report included roof work at the junior high (timing subject to weather), replacement of carpet and dry wood in the music room, camera system upgrades planned to be completed by Sept. 1, floor sanding and repainting projects at Camden Junior High and Camden High School, and patching work to improve parent pickup lanes. Staff said some work may be delayed if heavy rain occurs.
Other items: Staff also thanked community partners and internal teams for summer camp operations and noted upcoming professional development opportunities (a summer institute in Gatlinburg and a session in Jackson on Aug. 7; fall district meeting on Sept. 23). The director noted federal funding uncertainty and said the district had received a notice that certain federal funds were frozen but that staff expected the funds might be reinstated by Aug. 6; staff said a prolonged freeze could affect positions supported by those funds.
The director closed by asking the board to keep certain staff and family members in their thoughts for health reasons and to attend upcoming events; the meeting adjourned after a motion to adjourn.
