Staff explained this is the program’s third year in the district and that the three schools selected were those that had implemented the program most fully. Staff described the program as a culture-building initiative that emphasizes a social contract and greeting students at the door to strengthen relationships. Meeting presenters said the program is not easy to implement but that consistency has produced positive responses, particularly among older students.
Staff also said the district had previously covered the program at a substantially higher cost when it used federal ESSER funds, noting an approximate prior annual cost of $65,000; at the current contract term grants will cover most of the cost and the district payment would be $5,000. The board voted by roll call, 9–0, to approve the contract as presented.
The board’s motion authorizes continuation of the program for the coming year and asks the responsible administrators to monitor implementation and grant reporting for the three participating schools.
