School officials told the Punxsutawney Area School District board that they are readying multiple building and maintenance items for a vote at Tuesday’s public meeting, including bids for disposal of a district vehicle, a long‑planned high‑school roof project and emergency repairs to the high‑school boiler system.
Superintendent Doctor Kaye and facilities staff described one bid received to dispose of a district Chevy Cobalt. “We only received 1 bid. It is for $500, and it's from Carmen Jet,” the board was told. Board members were informed that acceptance of that single bid will be on the Tuesday consent agenda.
Facilities staff also said thermal testing shows the high‑school roof is approaching the end of its useful life and that preliminary planning is under way. The district plans to fund the work from money already set aside in the fund balance and capital reserve. A staff member said the district is “hoping to get the bids in” so the project could be included in next year’s budget, with a potential construction window over the summer recess into the 2026–27 school year. The staff member said an overlay material is being considered but noted one section of the roof is ballasted and would require removal of rock surfacing if a full replacement is needed.
Separately, the board was told of emergency boiler work at the high school. Facilities staff described that a previously started repair required draining the entire system because one isolation valve was missing, leaving the boiler shut down. Staff asked the board to add the valve installation and several other valve replacements to Tuesday’s agenda as emergency repairs. One itemized quote on the table was described as a set of higher‑quality replacement valves priced at $48,007.20; staff said the isolation valve has an identifying number of 1200875. The superintendent said these emergency repairs were not budgeted but that the district keeps funds for emergency repairs and will present the quotes on a revised agenda.
Board members asked for the supporting quotes to be uploaded ahead of Tuesday’s meeting; staff said the revised agenda and quotes would be posted for review. Several trustees also discussed whether state school facility grants might offset roof costs and said staff would look into grant options.
Board members did not take formal action in the session recorded in the transcript; staff repeatedly stated that the items would be presented to the board for approval on Tuesday.
Votes at a glance (items to be on Tuesday’s agenda): - Acceptance of one bid to dispose of a Chevy Cobalt (bid: $500 from Carmen Jet) — to be voted Tuesday. - Authorization to proceed with planning and bidding for the high‑school roof project (funded from fund balance/capital reserve) — to be included on Tuesday’s agenda for discussion/approval. - Approval of emergency boiler valve installation and additional valve replacements (quotes provided; emergency designation) — to be voted Tuesday.
Ending: The board asked staff to upload the bid and repair quotes ahead of Tuesday’s meeting so trustees could review documentation before the vote.
