Organizers of the Northwest Highway National Collegiate Golf Tournament briefed the Lamar City Council Oct. 7 and thanked the city for recurring hotel‑motel tax grant support that organizers said helped the event and associated junior‑golf scholarships.
The tournament director reported the college amateur (college AM) field included players from 17 foreign countries and 24 U.S. states this year. He said the nonprofit that runs junior golf in northwest Iowa provided $9,000 in scholarships to area high school students this year, distributed as three $3,000 awards. The director credited hotel‑motel tax grants from the city among annual funding sources that support the event and scholarship program.
The director also said a parent connected through tournament participation had spoken with media contacts about potential televised coverage for future events, though he described that as indeterminate.
Organizers used the public comment time to distribute materials to council and audience members and expressed appreciation for the council’s past and continuing support.
