Amherst County announces Apple Harvest Festival and fall events; volunteer and student participation highlighted

Speakers at the Oct. 7 meeting highlighted several upcoming community events, including the 54th annual Amherst Apple Harvest Festival and other fall activities.
"We officially kicked off fall in Amherst County this past weekend with the Sorghum Festival... next weekend is the 54th annual Amherst Apple Harvest Festival," said Toby Thurston, who asked residents to support the event. Thurston described student involvement across career-technical classes: a blood drive hosted by the nurse-aide program, auto-repair simulations from the busted knuckle garage students, cosmetology demonstrations, culinary students preparing Brunswick stew, adaptive classes baking pies, and performances by show choir, marching band and theater.
Board members and staff also announced Parks & Recreation events later in October: a Halloween "Spooktacular" and a trunk-or-treat for seniors, including vendors and refreshments. The board encouraged community attendance and support for student and volunteer activities.
