During claims review a supervisor called attention to a $70,000 roof-repair charge. Road/maintenance staff explained the county building (a shop) had a rubber roof with ballast that dated from the early 1990s and had reached the end of its useful life; staff said they had called a vendor (Northern Cedar Service Company) to patch the leak, and the vendor advised a full replacement was needed. The county staff said the roof was leaking and they had hired the vendor to replace it.
The board took a motion (moved by Garman; seconded by Hawes) to approve claims; upon voice vote the motion carried. Supervisors asked staff to provide more details about the roof project (scope and procurement path) for future review; staff noted the county’s policy change on prior authorization for Secondary Roads work and that some projects may not have required prior approval under the updated policy.
Why it matters: claims approval authorizes payment of county bills and can include significant capital and maintenance costs. Supervisors flagged the roof item for follow-up because the amount is substantial relative to routine maintenance.
