Calcasieu Parish video showing how crews change courthouse dome flag wins 3CMA award

At its Oct. 2, 2025 meeting the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury recognized the parish communications team after a staff-produced video on changing the flag on the courthouse dome placed in the top three at the City‑County Communications & Marketing Association awards.

Communications presenter Mr. Booth said the department moved toward storytelling that uses employees to explain operations. He singled out Jared Young for leading the project and thanked Facilities staff for cooperating on the shoot. A judge’s written comment quoted to the jury said, “the shots of Jeremy on the dome were amazing. It really felt like you were there with him during the process. While many take for granted the flags around us, there are amazing workers like Jeremy who keep up with this important tradition.”

The video includes voice and on-camera remarks by Jeremy Brashears of Facility Management. In the recording Brashears describes the process: they enter the old courthouse, climb to the dome’s crow’s nest where the hatch provides access to the pole, and change or lower the flag while wearing safety harnesses and working with a partner. He told viewers, “My name is Jeremy Brashears. I’m with Facility Management,” and demonstrated preparing and tying off equipment during the change.

Parish President Behrs praised the department’s approach and said he was “proud of this department,” noting in the meeting that using employees in videos is an effective, low-cost way to tell government stories.

The communications office said this was the first time the parish submitted entries to the association; the video was entered in the training and education category, where staff reported about 50 submissions and a top-three finish for the parish. The department said it intends to submit additional work in future competitions.
