The West Sacramento City Council on Oct. 1 issued a proclamation recognizing National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and honored Thriving Pink, a Davis-based nonprofit that provides peer mentoring, financial grants and support services to people affected by breast cancer.
Council members read the proclamation and invited Thriving Pink leaders and volunteers — Gina Bravo (hospital president, Dignity Health Woodland Memorial Hospital and board member), Katie Binky (board member), executive director Leslie Hunter and survivor Eleanor Sanchez — to speak. Speakers described Thriving Pink’s programs, including peer mentors, renewal retreats, wellness workshops and a Granting Pink program that provides financial help for treatment-related needs. Leslie Hunter noted the organization’s services are free.
A woman who identified herself as a breast cancer survivor urged residents to get regular mammograms, saying her cancers were detected only because she did not skip a screening. Council members and the mayor shared personal remarks in support of survivors and emphasized outreach to underserved populations in Yolo County.
The council encouraged distribution of Thriving Pink materials and pledged help publicizing Pinktober events. The presentation concluded with a group photograph.
Ending: Council members urged residents to seek screening and to contact Thriving Pink (thrivingpink.org) for local resources and support.
