County approves $749,999 lottery grant for turn lane to serve Capital Football Club complex

Kelly said the funds come from the Emergent Economic Opportunity Program and are intended to address traffic impacts so the Jason Sharp Center can host year-round events. “The proposed agreement is for $749,999 in economic development lottery funds,” Kelly said.
Colin Box, executive director of Capital Football Club, told commissioners the club serves “just under 7,000 kids this year” and described the project as the final phase of a long-term development of a 37-acre sports complex off State Street and Cordon Road. Box said the indoor facility will support youth programming, after-school partnerships and regional events.
During discussion, commissioners and speakers praised Capital Football Club’s recreational programs, noted the project’s community and cultural reach and asked about fundraising. Box said the club has raised most of the capital and remains short of roughly “a little less than a million dollars” for the community center portions; he directed interested donors to cfccsalem.com and mentioned upcoming fundraisers including a Nov. 15 auction.
A commissioner moved to approve the grant and a second was recorded; the motion passed on a voice vote. The agreement requires Capital Football Club to provide a written report and a presentation to county staff either before or upon completion of the facility and traffic improvements.
