Commissioners declare October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month; DA's office cites caseload figures

The Marion County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 1 approved a proclamation declaring October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Marion County.
Brendan Murphy, chief deputy district attorney for the Marion County District Attorney’s Office, presented the proclamation on behalf of DA Paige Clarkson and emphasized the DA’s office and victim-assistance staff role in responding to domestic violence. “Your pledge matters,” Murphy said in support of prevention efforts tied to the Purple Hands project earlier in the meeting.
The proclamation text entered into the record summarized local service and response figures for the prior year: the county experienced at least three domestic-violence homicides; the District Attorney’s Office received more than 1,000 law-enforcement reports of domestic violence and filed over 800 domestic-violence cases; the courts received 1,117 requests for protective orders; the Center for Hope and Safety received about 38,000 contacts and provided about 12,300 nights of shelter; and the Marion County Victim Assistance Division provided services to more than 865 victims.
A commissioner moved to approve the proclamation; a second was recorded and the board voted “aye.” The board recorded that the proclamation honors victims, recognizes service providers and pledges continued support for services and prevention efforts in the community.
Murphy and other speakers acknowledged the complexity and danger of domestic-violence calls to law enforcement and noted prevention and victim services as priorities.
