Chief Shane Smith of the Bonnetcroft Fire Department asked county committees whether the county would consider taking custody of a reserve fire engine before the department lists it for sale.
Smith told committee members he plans to sell “engine 204,” described in the meeting as a 1986 model with pumping capacity and equipment, and said he would prefer the county or another local department to house the truck rather than letting it sit outside or send it to market. He said he would like the county to consider the apparatus as a reserve for other departments if one of their engines is out of service.
Commissioners asked practical questions about the truck’s condition, storage and availability to other departments and suggested steps: notify other county fire chiefs, speak with Director McBride and consider airport or county grounds for temporary housing. Smith said he was asking for the committee’s thoughts before advertising the truck; he mentioned an initial asking price of $25,000.
Members recommended staff and the fire chiefs’ group coordinate outreach so departments in need have an opportunity to obtain the engine; commissioners suggested returning the item to next month’s agenda after outreach. No purchase, transfer or formal county acceptance was approved at the meeting.
