Jenny Harrison, Surry County tax administrator, asked the board for permission Oct. 6 to mail the county's annual debt setoff letters for delinquent real-property taxes.
"They will be mailed out, 01/21/2026 next year, and the they'll have 30 days to pay those taxes," Harrison told the board. She said the letters constitute the delinquent notices mailed in January and that, after 60 days from the delinquent date, the county will send unpaid accounts to the state for collection.
Nut graf: The debt setoff mailing is an annual administrative step the tax office uses to notify property owners of delinquent taxes and begin collection actions if accounts remain unpaid. Harrison asked for board permission to mail the letters; Commissioner Tucker moved to permit the mailings, Commissioner Hite seconded, and the board approved the motion by voice vote with all commissioners saying "aye." No public comment was recorded on the item.
Harrison said the specific mailing date is Jan. 21, 2026, and that the notice gives recipients 30 days to pay before further collection steps occur. She also told commissioners the county will send files to the state for collection after the 60-day mark counted from the delinquent date.
Ending: The board's approval authorizes the tax administrator to proceed with the 2026 debt setoff mailing schedule; no budget change or program expansion was discussed.
