Facilities staff told Strafford County commissioners on Sept. 30 that the original steamer in the jail kitchen failed and appears to be at “the end of its lifespan.”
Doug (staff member) said the county received a quote of about $5,000 to replace a heating element and rewire the unit, with a three‑month lead time for the part. He said a full replacement would likely cost between $20,000 and $30,000.
Staff reported about $6,000 remains in a two‑year capital line for a tray line remodel that is now complete; staff will obtain multiple bids and present a formal request for appropriation at a future meeting. The malfunction will alter the jail’s meal plan while the county addresses the equipment failure.
Commissioners asked staff to check additional suppliers and to prepare a full cost and funding recommendation for the next meeting.
