Downtown commission recommends new strategic initiatives, proposes boundary expansion north to 29th Street

Boundary recommendation: Silver said the Downtown Commission plans to recommend that City Council expand the commission’s boundaries north from MLK to 29th Street — bringing West Campus and the university neighborhood overlay into the Downtown Commission’s remit — and to extend the southern boundary to include property around the Austin American‑Statesman site just south of downtown.
Commissioner comments: Commissioners on the Music Commission raised concerns that East Austin entertainment areas face similar issues and asked whether the Downtown Commission’s scope should be enlarged or whether other city entities already cover East Austin. Silver said the recommendation was made to align Downtown Commission boundaries with a council boundary change and that East Austin was not included in this specific proposal.
