Board members discuss WASB regional meeting takeaways and internal meeting practices

A McFarland School Board member shared highlights from a recent Wisconsin Association of School Boards regional meeting and the board discussed results of its internal meeting self-review during the Oct. 6 meeting.
The board member described the WASB regional event as focused on “strategic focus and accountability,” legislative priorities and a lighthouse study on board mindset and equity. She said the legislative session is unlikely to produce major new education laws before 2026 and that WASB’s 2026 legislative agenda represents association-wide priorities rather than district-specific aims.
Board members then reviewed results of their meeting self-review (administered three times per year). Strengths cited included timely agendas, comprehensive board packets, presence of administrators and ample opportunity for public comment. Areas identified for growth included clarifying what “prepared” means for board members, more consistent timing for presentation materials, and sticking to agenda time allotments.
Discussion included practical steps board members already use to prepare—reviewing the board book, cross-referencing the agenda, asking administrators follow-up questions before the meeting—and suggestions such as chunking long policy documents, printing packets for annotation, and possibly adding a timekeeper role if time-allocation weaknesses increase.
Members also discussed modeling expectations for students by minimizing device use in meetings. The board agreed to continue current practices, to consider a short definitions exercise (what does ‘prepared’ mean for this board) and to share notes from the WASB regional meeting with colleagues who could not attend.
