The Buildings & Grounds Committee on Oct. 6 approved staff recommendations for a package of short‑term pedestrian safety improvements at the four corners surrounding Buckner Park.
Alex, city engineering staff, reviewed the study, saying staff conducted traffic counts (weekday and Saturday) and examined five years of crash history. "Of the four intersections, the northwest corner at Broadway and Oakland had the highest number of crashes," Alex said, noting a mix of rear‑end and right‑angle collisions. Staff recommended adding secondary stop signs on some approaches, high‑visibility crosswalks, targeted no‑parking zones to improve sight lines, and pedestrian signing including advanced warning on the busier approaches.
Alder Moltzand sponsored the referral and told the committee the improvements were responsive to persistent resident reports of close calls and heavy weekend park traffic. Committee members also noted the planned Greenfield Avenue reconstruction is an opportunity to address longer‑term improvements.
The committee voted to approve the staff recommendations for signing and markings; staff said actual pavement marking work would occur in spring when the paint crew is back in service. Chair Greg noted that higher‑cost reconfigurations would be considered within future capital project schedules where appropriate.
