The Town of Hampden Conservation Commission confirmed that the town has posted the conservation agent position and discussed internal staff qualifications and prior attempts to share services with neighboring towns.
Commission members noted that Joe, who joined the commission staff in August and holds a degree in wetland science, "has the qualifications if you want it," a member said during the meeting. The town manager had posted the job to comply with hiring rules, the commission reported, and the commission expects to see whether an internal appointment or an external hire will fill the role.
Commissioners also recalled prior efforts to share a conservation agent with the town of Granby; those negotiations did not proceed because Granby declined to share. One commissioner said the candidate previously slated to be shared was ultimately hired full time by another town, leaving Hampden to proceed with its own hiring process.
Commission members said the staffing decision will affect the commission's ability to conduct site inspections, follow up on enforcement actions and manage workload as outdoor season shortens. The commission did not take a final hiring vote at the meeting but recorded that the posting is in place and that Joe currently performs many of the commission's technical duties.
Next steps include monitoring the posted recruitment, clarifying job responsibilities between the conservation agent and other staff, and determining whether an internal hire will be pursued or an external search will continue.
