The Mobile City Board of Adjustment on a voice vote approved a 90-day extension of a previously granted sign variance for 5133 Cottage Hill Road.
The extension was requested by Alvin Ramos, who identified himself as representing Thomas Sign and Awning. Ramos said the project ran into construction delays and asked the board for more time to complete permitting and installation: “We ran into some delays in the start of construction…we're scheduled to install steel here at the end of the month. …we are just requesting an extension of the already approved variance,” Ramos said.
The variance covers signage allowances for a single-tenant site in the B-2 Neighborhood Business district. Board Chair William Guess opened the application for public comment; no written or in-person public comments were submitted on the item. After brief board questions about the requested time frame, a motion to grant the extension was made and seconded. The board set the extension period at 90 days and the chair announced the motion carried.
Why it matters: The B-2 code limits signage for single-tenant sites; the extension preserves the applicant's right to install authorized signs while construction continues. The board did not receive opposition or additional conditions from staff at the hearing.
What happens next: The applicant will have 90 days to complete permitting and installation under the previously approved variance. If the work is not completed within that period the applicant will need to seek further relief or reapply.
