West Windsor environmental commission seeks Sustainable Jersey grant; gas leaf‑blower and shade‑tree ordinance work continue

The West Windsor Environmental Commission on Oct. 9 recommended that the township apply for a Sustainable Jersey grant in partnership with PSE&G that would fund outreach and resident education on energy‑saving opportunities.
According to the commission’s report to council, the grant would provide $2,500 for expenses, a free branded website, a short video and direct mailings to residents describing energy‑saving and cost‑saving measures the utility offers. The council was asked to approve a resolution on a future agenda to apply for the grant.
Commission members also continued work on a proposed gas leaf‑blower ordinance; the commission’s draft recommendations are similar to Princeton’s ordinance and would be forwarded to the township administration for legal review. The natural‑lawn ordinance is currently with the zoning board attorney and will be reviewed by the environmental commission after legal input.
Separately, the Shade Tree Commission sent revisions to its enabling ordinance to the mayor and administration; council members asked that the Shade Tree revisions be placed on the Nov. 11 council meeting agenda for discussion and possible introduction after legal review.
No ordinance was adopted during the Oct. 14 meeting; the council requested additional legal review and interdepartmental coordination before formal action.
