Commission endorses bike lanes on Hendrick, recommends targeted traffic calming and further design work

The Dover Bike & Trail Commission on Oct. 24 recommended permanent bike lanes on Hendrick and a set of targeted traffic-calming measures — while agreeing that some temporary tactical elements tested this year should be redesigned before being made permanent.

Commission member Matt (Commission member) summarized the panel’s work sessions and said the group reached consensus that the painted traffic lanes on Hendrick and Maine provided safer space for cyclists and helped reduce speeds, but not all temporary elements performed well when paired with bike lanes.

"The traffic lanes on Hendrick and, Maine worked," Matt said, noting the commission wants the bike lanes extended to the park so the lane does not end a block short of the park entrance. The commission recommended three locations on Hendrick where additional calming should be considered: the north and south ends of Miner’s Park (to improve transitions where parking and paths meet) and the Ivy median area, where curb geometry allows speeding or "swooping" around medians.
