Votes at a glance: Trenton City Council approves grants, events, appointments and schedules public hearing

At its Oct. 6 meeting the Trenton City Council approved routine permits, accepted a federal grant, authorized park and field work, confirmed an appointment and scheduled a follow-up public hearing for a commercial rehabilitation application.
The Trenton City Council on Monday approved a slate of routine and project-specific items, including acceptance of a federal firefighter grant, special-event permits, a park drainage contract and an appointment to the civic commission.
The council unanimously approved acceptance of a 2024 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) award of $52,602.99 for water- and ice-rescue equipment and training, with a required city match of at least 5% ($2,630.16) to be funded from the Fire Department supplies account (101336754). The motion to accept the grant was moved and supported and carried by unanimous vote.
Council members also approved several temporary event and street-closure requests: two Boxford Street block parties (Oct. 25 and Oct. 31), and the Trenton Hockey Association’s annual decal sale on Oct. 11. The Downtown Development Authority’s special-events application for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 29 — including vendor use of West Jefferson, closure of portions of Saint Joseph and use of the Elm Street municipal parking lot — was approved. The council recorded an estimated attendance of more than 3,000 for the Small Business Saturday event.
The council approved a $20,248 contract with Campbell Brothers to install a subsurface drainage system at Ennis Field in Slocum Park. The project was described as necessary to eliminate persistent flooding of the baseball field; council discussion included timing and construction impacts. The council also approved receipt and placement on file of the 30th District Court fines, costs and fees for August 2025 (showing $8,223.43 to the city).
Administrative approvals included the appointment of Steven Figueroa to the Civic Commission (term through Nov. 1, 2028) and rescheduling the council’s Oct. 20 meeting to Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, with a public hearing at 6:45 p.m. The council approved the minutes of the Sept. 15 regular meeting and authorized disbursements dated Oct. 6, 2025, totaling $5,931,845.51.
The council also voted to hold a closed study session immediately following the meeting for the purpose of collective bargaining. The motion for the closed study session passed on a roll-call vote.
