Officials describe new generator order, repairs to aging unit

The department said the replacement unit uses a Cummins motor and vendor estimates four to five months for delivery, followed by several weeks for installation and required construction. Officials said the existing generator is 33 years old, has oil leaks and a failing rear housing seal, and requires frequent repairs. The department reported recent repairs to keep the current unit operational while awaiting the ordered replacement.
Officials said replacing the aging generator on schedule avoids the expense and logistics of renting a temporary unit, rewiring and longer outages. Township trustees and the fire commission supported the replacement at an earlier board meeting; the police commission discussed the maintenance and procurement timeline during its department updates.
Trustee Mark Mills, who attended the meeting, said he supports repurposing the old generator once the new unit is installed and urged the township to explore reuse options.
