The El Mirage Common Council on Oct. 21 authorized the city manager to implement a temporary utility payment deferral program for federal and military employees impacted by the federal government shutdown. The program, introduced by Vice Mayor Parsons, will allow eligible utility customers to defer city water and related utility payments while the federal government remains closed; participants will have 60 days after the federal government reopens to pay deferred balances.
Vice Mayor Parsons said other Arizona jurisdictions had adopted similar measures and noted that APS (the regional electric utility) had indicated it is offering its own deferral option to customers impacted by the shutdown. Council discussion confirmed staff will require documentation proving federal employment and will prepare an outreach plan so affected residents know how to enroll.
The motion passed by voice vote. Staff were directed to develop enrollment and verification procedures, a public-notification plan and to coordinate necessary adjustments with Finance and Utility Billing.
