Parks staff presented options for consistent park signage on Oct. 15 and proposed weatherproof, inset display boards (like those at Fenway and Lakeside) to house park rules, event notices and QR codes for outreach.
Planner Kyle said the city’s master plan and past practice have recommended consistent signage and that U‑channel or lightweight posts can be maintenance and safety targets. He presented examples of display boards and suggested a two‑sided approach in which the front identifies the park and the rear holds changing notices, reservation information or QR codes.
Commissioners generally approved the idea of a consistent, branded display board that would be weatherproof and lockable. Commissioner Karen suggested the boards could be used for event advertising and information, and commissioners discussed the possibility of tapping local resources (for example, schools or community makers) for fabrication if materials meet weatherproofing and durability standards. Commissioners also raised a separate operational issue—signage for bicycles at play areas—citing instances of children riding bikes inside playgrounds where signage or a nearby bike rack could reduce conflicts.
Staff said they would investigate display‑board vendors and costs, develop a consistent standard and return with a procurement recommendation.
