The Infrastructure Planning and Sustainability Committee voted Oct. 22 to forward to the full City Council a request from the Tacoma chapter of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union to honorarily name a section of East Alexander Avenue "Willie Adams Way." The committee approved forwarding the request by voice vote; the motion was declared adopted.
Jared Baker, an ILWU representative, told the committee that Willie Adams joined Local 23 in 1978 and served through 2003 and that renaming the section would recognize his contributions to the waterfront labor community. "Willie is a member of Local 23 beginning in 1978, lasting through 02/2003. Very influential person in the community," Baker said.
Staff said the naming request had completed required preliminary steps and will be scheduled before full council for formal consideration. The committee did not amend the request and took no final action beyond forwarding it to council.
Next step: the full City Council will consider the naming request at a future meeting; ILWU representatives said they expect to attend that meeting.
